Silke Pope’s journey in public service began with her involvement in Greenbelt’s Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC), which paved the way for her election to council in 2009. As chair of the PSAC, she played a pivotal role in enhancing the city’s safety by advocating for the installation of security cameras and emergency call boxes in the city. Pope also serves as council liaison to both the PSAC and the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. Her unwavering commitment to public safety and quality-of-life initiatives continues to make a positive impact on the community. Pope has made significant contributions at the county, state and national levels. She has served on various committees, including the National League of Cities Public Safety and Crime Prevention Steering Committee and the NLC Small Cities Council, which she had the honor of chairing in 2016.
Pope earned a prestigious fellowship from the University of Maryland’s Academy for Excellence in Local Governance, which enriched her understanding of municipal functions, governmental policy and ethics. She also completed graduate level courses through the Academy, including Leadership and Economic Development. These experiences have significantly contributed to her expertise and dedication to public service.
Professionally, Pope brings 24 years of experience with Prince George’s County Public Schools, where she works with a diverse student population. While first at Greenbelt Middle School, she now shares her expertise at Springhill Lake Elementary. She is involved in the Achieve Tutoring Program, which emphasizes social skills and emotional wellness. Her earlier background in international business relations, banking, credit card fraud detection and call center operations honed her organizational and bilingual communication skills.
After proudly becoming a U.S. citizen in 2006, Pope immersed herself in community life. She is a member of St. Hugh of Grenoble Church since 2000 and has participated in numerous fundraising efforts. She is known for her authentic German dishes at St. Hugh’s annual Oktoberfest. Pope also served on Belle Point’s Homeowners Association Board and is currently on the Charlestowne Village Condominium Board. She is also a valued member of the American Legion Post 136 Ladies Auxiliary.
Pope has called Greenbelt home for 27 years, since moving from Germany with her husband, who retired from the United States Army. They initially lived in Franklin Park before finding their home in Belle Point. Pope cherishes time spent with her six grandchildren and continues to be a respected presence in her community.
