Kevin Lockhart (Coach K)

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Kevin Lockhart, Coach K, is a passionate and loving father, mentor and coach who has devoted his life to serving others. A Greenbelt resident for the past 18 years, he has balanced the challenges of being a single father to his son, Dontay, with his deep commitment to giving back to the community.

Before settling in Greenbelt, Coach K worked in the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation for 10 years. In 1991, he joined the U.S. Army National Guard, where he served as a hospital dietary specialist. His assignments included Fort Jackson, S. C., Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and the Maryland National Guard headquartered in Greenbelt. During his service, he earned multiple certificates and awards for excellence.

Beyond his military service, Coach K has spent more than 15 years working with youth, including 10 years coaching football, basketball and baseball for the Greenbelt Boys and Girls Club. He has also mentored young people at Springhill Lake Recreation Center and strongly advocated for the Springhill Lake Recreation Center as a vital part of the community.

Dedicated to strengthening Greenbelt, Coach K has been consistent every Thursday with his Coach K Food Giveaway at Franklin Park, providing support to families and friends experiencing food insecurity. His ongoing service demonstrates his belief in bridging communities through action and compassion.

Faith and service have also been central to his life. For over 20 years, Coach K has been an active member of Capital Temple Ministries in Hyattsville, where he continues to serve and draw inspiration for his work in the community.

Coach K’s lifelong dedication to mentorship, service and community-building drives his commitment to represent Greenbelt with integrity and vision.
