Joshua Thomas Wins School Board, Hogan Keeps Top Job, by Cathie Meetre

With the exception of Republican Governor Larry Hogan, Democrats retained all state and local partisan slots associated with Greenbelt, including the two new at-large county council members – according to preliminary counts. Prince Georgians supported Hogan’s opponent, Ben Jealous, by more than two to one, with ~209,000 votes to Hogan’s ~83,000 in the unofficial tally. Jealous was also ahead in Baltimore City, Montgomery County and Charles County but overall Hogan garnered nearly 1.2M votes with Jealous attracting just over 900K. Two new at-large members of the county council, Mel Franklin and Calvin Hawkins, both beat their one republican opponent by more than a factor of five.
Closer to home, the school board race saw newcomer Joshua Thomas upset incumbent Lupi Grady. A forest of blue signs for Thomas appeared in the city over the last several days after an energetic house-to-house door-knocking campaign by the candidate. Grady, a rookie at the last election, cited Thomas’s inexperience and lack of children in school as strikes against him – but Grady’s enthusiastic pollside promotors didn’t prevent Thomas, an Eleanor Roosevelt High School graduate, taking 12,000 votes to her 9,000.
