On Tuesday, July 1, the FBI announced the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. will be their new headquarters. This follows Trump’s vow in March to prevent it from moving to Greenbelt, which he falsely claimed was “three hours away” in the “liberal” state of Maryland. FBI Director Kash Patel called the move to the Reagan Building cost effective and resource efficient. The Reagan Building formerly housed the U.S. Agency for International Development, which was dismantled by Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), without congressional input, over the spring.
After years of assessment, the General Services Administration selected Greenbelt as the site for the new FBI HQ in November 2023. Plans included a secure FBI facility and a mixed-use commercial development at the Greenbelt Metro Station, a move anticipated to bring with it billions of dollars in economic development.
