Byrd Elected and Sworn In As New Mayor of Greenbelt

Colin Byrd was elected and sworn in as mayor of Greenbelt by the newly elected city councilmembers at their Monday, November 11 meeting. The city charter specifies that at its first meeting following a regular election, the council will choose one of its members as mayor. The mayor presides at council meetings and is recognized as the head of the city government, according to the charter, for all “ceremonial purposes, by the courts for serving civil purposes, and by the governor of the state for purposes of military law.” Clerk of the Circuit Court of Prince George’s County designee, LaShawn Freeman, administered the oath of office.
